Vagamon is a small hill station on the Idukki–Kottayam border of Kerala, sitting at about 1,100 metres above sea level. Unlike its busier cousin Munnar, Vagamon has kept its quiet — endless green meadows, pine plantations, tea estates and mist that rolls in without warning.
Most attractions sit within a 10 km radius, so two days covers the essentials comfortably. Here are the places genuinely worth your time, in the order a first-time visitor should see them.
Vagamon Meadows (Mottakunnu)
The signature image of Vagamon — bare, rounded green hills stretching to the horizon. The meadows are best at sunrise or late afternoon when the light turns golden and the crowds thin out. Walk beyond the first two hills and you will often have an entire valley to yourself.
Vagamon Pine Forest
A planted pine valley from the colonial era, with tall symmetrical trunks and a soft needle-carpeted floor. It is the most photographed spot in Vagamon — arrive before 9 AM for empty frames. Entry is ticketed (around ₹50) and a short downhill walk from the road.
Eagle View Point, Pullikkanam
A cliff-edge viewpoint where eagles ride the thermals below your feet and the valley drops away for hundreds of metres. It sits in Pullikkanam, right beside Simons Holidays — our guests walk there for sunrise before breakfast. On clear days you can see the plains of Kottayam far below.
Vagamon Lake & Boating
A small, calm lake near the town centre with pedal boating and a walking path. Ideal for an easy evening after a day of trekking, especially with children. Boating costs are nominal and the lakeside chai stalls are excellent.
Kurisumala & Thangal Para
Vagamon's famous trio of hills reflects three faiths side by side. Kurisumala is a Christian pilgrimage hill with a scenic climb past fourteen crosses; Thangal Para is a Muslim shrine set around a massive balanced boulder with sweeping views. Both are short drives from town and free to visit.
Paragliding at Kolahalamedu
Vagamon is Kerala's paragliding capital, and Kolahalamedu hill is the launch site. Tandem flights with certified pilots run from roughly October to May, weather permitting, and cost ₹3,000–₹4,500. The take-off moment — running off a green hillside into open sky — is worth every rupee.
Marmala Waterfall & Vagamon Falls
Marmala is a hidden waterfall reached by a short plantation trek, at its thundering best from June to November. Combine it with the smaller roadside falls on the Erattupetta–Vagamon route, which flow spectacularly in the monsoon.
Tea Estates & Jeep Safari Trails
The slopes between Vagamon and Pullikkanam are carpeted with tea. A guided jeep safari — which we run daily from the resort — strings together estate roads, off-road climbs and viewpoints that tour buses cannot reach. It is the single best way to see Vagamon beyond the standard spots.
